How to request a NaxLex refund, by payment method
NaxLex itself is unlikely to refund anyone while its accounts are frozen, so go through whoever handled your payment.
| How you paid | Where to ask | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Credit or debit card (including card payments processed by Stripe) | Your bank or card issuer: ask for a chargeback | Usually your best chance. Time limits are set by your card network and bank, often around 120 days, so act now. |
| PayPal | PayPal Resolution Center: open a dispute | Disputes must be opened within 180 days of payment. If PayPal declines, ask the bank behind the card you funded it with. |
| Cash App | Cash App support, in the app | Cash Card purchases can be disputed; person-to-person payments are much harder to reverse. |
| Apple App Store or Google Play | reportaproblem.apple.com or your Google Play order history | Only applies if you subscribed through an app store. Request a refund for a service that stopped working. |
| Mobile money (e.g. M-Pesa) | Your mobile money provider | Reversals are usually only for transfers sent in error, so chances are low. Ask anyway and keep the transaction code. |
| Crypto or gift cards | No reliable route | These payments generally can't be reversed. Report the loss if you suspect fraud. |
How to file a NaxLex chargeback
Find the payment
Look in your bank app, card statement or email receipts for the charge. It may show as NaxLex, Naxlex Prep or a payment processor's name.
Gather your evidence
Save receipts, your subscription confirmation, any emails to NaxLex support, and a screenshot showing the site is down, with the date.
Contact your bank
Call or use the app to dispute the charge. Choose a reason like "services not provided" or "service cancelled by merchant".
Explain clearly
Use the short message below, then keep your dispute reference number.
Follow up
Banks usually take a few weeks to decide. Answer any questions quickly so the dispute doesn't lapse.

NaxLex refund questions
The questions former subscribers ask most.
Can I get a refund from NaxLex?
Possibly, but not from NaxLex directly. Its payment accounts are frozen by court order. Your best chance is a chargeback or dispute through your bank, card issuer or PayPal, on the grounds that the service you paid for is no longer provided.
Will NaxLex refund me directly?
It is very unlikely. The court froze NaxLex's accounts with payment processors and banks, and the people behind it are barred from operating the site. Emails to NaxLex support are unlikely to be answered.
Why is NaxLex not answering emails?
NaxLex is under a federal court order that shut down its website and froze its money, so normal customer support has stopped. Don't wait for a reply before contacting your bank, because chargeback time limits keep running.
How long do I have to file a chargeback?
It depends on your card network and bank, but limits are often around 120 days from the payment or from when the service stopped. PayPal disputes must be opened within 180 days of payment. Contact your bank as soon as possible to be safe.
What reason should I give for the chargeback?
Choose "services not provided" or "service cancelled by merchant", and explain that a court ordered the website shut down and you can no longer access what you paid for. Mention the date you paid and the subscription length.
What evidence do I need for a NaxLex refund?
Your receipt or bank statement entry, your subscription confirmation, any emails to NaxLex, and a dated screenshot showing the site is down. You can also reference the court case: Elsevier Inc. v. Naxlex Prep LLC, No. 1:26-cv-07130 (S.D.N.Y.).
Can I get a NaxLex refund if I paid with PayPal?
Yes, you can try. Open a dispute in PayPal's Resolution Center within 180 days of payment. PayPal's protection has limits for digital services, so if it declines, contact the bank behind the card that funded the payment.
Can I get a refund if I paid by M-Pesa or mobile money?
It is harder. Mobile money reversals are usually only for money sent to the wrong number. Contact your provider with the transaction code anyway, and keep a record of the payment in case there is a wider resolution later.
Will the frozen NaxLex money be returned to students?
There's no announcement of that. The asset freeze protects money that Elsevier and ATI are claiming in the lawsuit. Don't rely on it for a refund; go through your bank or payment provider instead.
Will filing a chargeback get me in trouble?
No. Disputing a charge for a service you paid for and can no longer use is a normal consumer right. It has nothing to do with your school or your exam record.
Should I pay someone who promises to recover my NaxLex money?
No. "Refund recovery" services that ask for an upfront fee are a common scam after a site shuts down. Only deal directly with your own bank, card issuer, PayPal or payment provider.
